Food Hygiene and Safety Certification

Birds of Derby employ about 700 people, most of whom need a food handler’s hygiene certificate. This has historically been carried out on line, with the four sales supervisors invigilating their respected employees training and tests. This was proving to be very time consuming for the Sales Supervisors and keeping up with the demand of renewals and new staff was almost impossible.

Having worked with Birds for nearly 5 years NFDT have a good understanding of their business needs and when approached by Birds of derby, we offered to deliver HS1, Food Hygiene and Safety. This qualification is certified by Scottish Bakers as the awarding body. Planned by Karen Wain (Birds Senior Sales Supervisor), Karen Taylor (NFDT Training Manager) and Karon Lucke (Training Advisor) a trial of 10 began in March this year. This was rapidly followed by another 20. Now in the middle of October 75 of Birds candidates have achieved and a further 35 are on the way! Karon Lucke arranges suitable times to deliver the training and then returns 4-6 weeks later to carry out the test with each candidate.

NFDT have also re-visited the training materials used in this qualification, updated it and made it more user friendly, after feedback from the candidates, but also keeping it in line with Food Standard requirements.

Marie Davies was the first of Birds candidates to achieve. In her present role for 2 years, Marie had completed a hygiene course online in a prior role.

Marie said “I was very nervous undertaking something new, but also very pleased that the test was on paper and not on a laptop. Karon made me feel at ease.”

This quote from Marie reflects the comments of many of the candidates; overall they are pleased the test is not on the laptop and that it takes a lot less time.

Karen Wain (Birds Senior Sales Supervisor) states “Having this facility for external training being delivered has been an absolute life saver for the sales team. The staff who have been through have been very positive about the training and I do feel they have benefited from having a dedicated one to one trainer rather than something the sales team are doing alongside their other commitments.”
